Here for you at Glyndwr SU: Welcoming you to Wrexham

We can’t believe it’s almost September again, and the start of a new academic year is on the horizon. The last few months have been a bit of a COVID whirlwind, and while we continue to slowly recover from the pandemic, we’re ready to welcome back new and returning students to Wrexham next month.

If you’re a new student at Glyndwr and are moving away from home to live in Wrexham, then we’ve put together some tips for you to prepare from living away from home.

  1. For many of you, this could be the first time you’ve ever lived away from your parents or guardians. Very scary indeed! But it’s also a time of excitement, living away from home will make you learn things about yourself that wouldn’t have been possible if you didn’t take that leap, and personal growth from this newfound independence is a huge achievement.

  2. Making sure you’re organised is essential to happy student living. Be sure to check that you’re all sorted with your accommodation, student finance and enrolment. Make sure you’ve got all the learning resources you need, too, like a laptop, stationary or course books.

  3. Social media is a gem, especially in times like these where connecting with people has relied on the internet more than ever. Have a look for Facebook groups for your course or accommodation or have a look at our list of societies and sports teams to see if there’s any you might want to join. Most of our societies do have Facebook pages, too, so getting in touch with them prior to Welcome Week could be a great opportunity to get to know people with common interests in advance.

  4. Get ahead with your course reading! Or build a study plan to help you keep on top of your uni workload.

  5. Set yourself a weekly budget for food, bills and other expenses. This is a crucial life skill that will really help your university experience be as stress-free as possible, whilst setting you up for life as a postgraduate in the big wide world.

  6. Learn to cook! Don’t live off of takeaways if you can help it as they’re unhealthy and expensive. Asking someone to show you how to cook your favourite meals, or even looking on YouTube is really useful, and experimenting in the kitchen can be fun, cheap and very tasty!

  7. Pack in advance, and make sure you’ve got all your essentials like bedding, cutlery and cleaning products!

Timetables for the first semester of this year will be available on the University website from the 1st of September.

At your Students’ Union, we’re preparing to welcome you all in the best way that we can. We know that this year has been one like no other, and the Freshers’ we’d usually host would be jam-packed with activities and getting as many people involved as we possibly can. Although it won’t quite work out that way this year, we’ve still got a number of socially distanced events for Welcome Week in the pipeline that will help ease you back into the academic year as either a new or returning student at Glyndwr.

Freshers’ events this year will be taking place from Monday the 28th - Friday the 2nd October.

Take a look at the Welcome Week section of our website, or give us a follow/like on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to keep up-to-date with our plans for Welcome Week.

Preparing for moving home can be a daunting yet exciting thing, whether you’re moving into halls or private accommodation. Here at Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union, we want to be here to help with any support or signposting you may need during your studies.
