It’s a busy time of year at WGSU. Not only are we well into the nominations period with Elections, we’ve also just opened nominations for this year’s WGSU Awards.

The Students’ Union Awards Night is a special occasion where students and staff come together to celebrate those who have gone the extra mile at the University. It's our biggest event of the year; dedicated solely to highlighting amazing achievements, and you're invited!

This year’s ceremony will take place on Thursday the 13th of May. There are a range of categories and criteria for the Awards, and although it will be different again this year, we firmly believe that the achievements of our students and staff should be recognised and rewarded, especially given the challenging time we are in.

Both students and staff are eligible to nominate for an award, and if you already have someone in mind you'd like to nominate, you can do this here

If you are a student, you might have a course tutor or a lecturer who has helped you through a very difficult academic year where we have been limited to most lectures being online. Adapting to a teaching framework of no face-to-face teaching has been a real challenge for the majority, and we want to know if your lecturer or course tutor has helped to take the weight off of such a difficult burden.

Perhaps your course rep has made a positive difference to your studies this year, and if you think that's the case, there's an award for Course Rep of the Year. Course Reps are a crucial cog in the Student Voice machine, and they work hard to represent you in making your course the best it can be.

Our student groups are the beating heart of our Students' Union and without them, life here would be considerably duller! There could be a society that has gone above and beyond to keep you motivated and engaged in something alongside your studies.

Although there have been no sports teams running this year due to the pandemic, our societies have adapted wonderfully to the circumstances. It is because of this that we have introduced new awards.

These are:

  • Best Society Event
  • Best Charity Fundraiser (Society)

There is also a new award for Best Postgraduate Supervisory Team.

If you are a staff member, you can nominate in two categories. These are Operational/Professional Services Awards and Sustainability Awards.

If you are nominated for an award, you could be chosen as the winner in your nominated category by a diverse judging panel. The judging panel will consist of:

  • One student
  • One senior staff member
  • One member of the University’s Professional Services Team
  • One Student Council Member or WGSU Staff Member
  • One member of teaching staff

We can't host a successful Awards Ceremony without the nominations from you, so if you'd like to nominate an award winner from the categories, then click here. You could really make someone's day by nominating them for an award!

Full details of the arrangements for the Students’ Union Awards will be announced in due course. Keep an eye out on our website and social media channels for updates!
