After the reduced activity of the last two years on campus, all students have returned and a distinctive buzz of enthusiasm for learning is in the air. For a number of reasons, the Students’ Union is often a key point of contact. It may be to spend time at Glyn’s bar, meet with sports teams or societies, or purchase a hoodie from the shop.

From time to time, students may need a little more guidance and support from the independent Student Advice Centre or signposting to university departments that can support with Money and Funding or Study Skills.

The team at WGSU are aware of challenges around the cost-of-living crisis and food poverty. With this in mind we have recently launched a new campaign to support students in time of hardship and crisis.

About Help Yourshelf

The new campaign Help Yourshelf is a food, personal care, and stationery cupboard for students to take items in times of need. Students occasionally must make the difficult choice between coming to campus or eating a meal and feeding their families.

Katie, Student Voice Coordinator has been leading on Course rep training giving her the chance to meet with students and discuss the campaign which has reaffirmed the value of the food cupboard. Students have expressed they are pleased that this resource is available to them and will definitely spread the word with their peers. One student highlighted the need for the cupboard to be discreet so if they must use the cupboard, they will not feel conspicuous and judged.

The Help Yourshelf cupboard is set up in the Students’ Union tucked away in the main corridor. The items in the cupboard are accessible from 9am - 5pm.

Donations welcome!

Donations can be left at the SU reception and shop, main university reception and the library building situated on Plas Coch Campus.

No referrals are necessary for students to use this cupboard.
