What is an Academic Appeal?

“…..a request for a review of a decision of an academic body charged with making decisions on assessment, student progression and awards”

In other words……….an academic appeal allows a student to challenge a decision which has been made by an assessment board in relation to their results. 

 

On what grounds can I Appeal?

Grounds for Appeal are:

  • There were procedural errors during the recording transcript and/or reporting of results.
  • There were exceptional personal circumstances which could have affected your performance, which for good cause had not been submitted in accordance with the Extenuating Circumstances procedure.
  • There were defects or irregularities in the application of the assessment regulations or in the written instructions or advice provided on those regulations.
  • In the case of a student whose thesis has been examined for a PhD or MPhil, there were defects or irregularities in the constitution of the viva Panel and there was good and reasonable cause why this had not been reported by the student prior to the decision of the Assessment Board.

 

Examples of reasons why a student may appeal include:     

  • Extenuating Circumstances (like illness or personal problems) that affected your performance, which you were unable to tell your programme team about at the time.
  • You believe your degree classification was not calculated correctly.
  • You believe that you were given the wrong advice about the regulations.

 

Grounds for Appeal are not:

  • If you disagree with the academic judgement of the Assessment Board.
  • Extenuating circumstances claims which could have been made in accordance with the Extenuating Circumstances Procedure and you do not have a valid reason why this procedure was not used at the time of assessment.
  • Appeals which are not supported by appropriate evidence, are received outside of the deadline without good or reasonable cause.

 

Examples of Appeals which would not be accepted into the process are:

  • Disagreeing with the mark.
  • Disagreement about a degree classification awarded.
  • Challenges to academic judgement.
  • Extenuating Circumstances claims where there is no good and reasonable cause for failing to present the Extenuating Circumstances at the time of the assessment (i.e. you can’t show why you didn’t inform the your programme team of what was going on at the time)

 

What do I need to include with my appeal?

You MUST also include evidence to back up your reasons for Appealing and ensure that this is relevant to the points you are making. Appeals submitted without evidence are likely to be rejected by the University.

Examples of evidence to support your Appeal are:

  • Independent medical evidence, for example a letter from your GP.
  • Copies of emails between you and your lecturer.
  • Any documentation you feel supports your claim.

 

When and where do I submit an Academic Appeal?

Once you have received your results, you have 10 working days in which you can submit an appeal. Appeals submitted after 10 working days WILL NOT be accepted into the process.
