From my own student experience, I became very overwhelmed after Freshers’ Week. Classes were back, and you’re finally in a routine. However, I felt like I needed to know everything right there and then. There are so many support services I wish I had accessed when I felt like this.

One thing I found difficult at first was making sure I was taking the right precautions to stay safe. I moved to Wrexham, so not only was I starting university, but I also moved here without really visiting Wrexham before! So, I thought I’d write this blog with some top tips that I wish I had followed, and hopefully they’ll help you too.

An obvious tip, but one that’s often forgotten, is online safety!

These days, your digital life is just as important as your real life, so keep it secure. Use strong, unique passwords for your University and social media accounts, and turn on two-factor authentication whenever you can it’s an added layer of protection.

If you’d like more information on how to make your devices more secure, the Library has a Tech Zone, which is a drop-in service open Monday to Friday, 10 am-4 pm.

Another thing I did as a student was saving the University's Security number in my phone, just in case I ever needed it

If you’d like to do the same, the numbers are 07764 687909 or 07640 687910. If you ever need security right away, you can either call these numbers or visit their office, which can be found both in Wrexham Student Village or in the Students’ Union building, immediately on the right-hand-side as you enter the building. I also learnt my term-time address, just in case I ever had to give it quickly and this was a lifesaver!

Staying safe isn’t just about physical safety; your mental and emotional health matters too

There are so many support services you can access while at university. ASK is the student support team that can help with enquiries relating to inclusion; counselling and mental health; student wellbeing, and careers and employability. ASK has support desks at the Plas Coch, Northop, and St. Asaph campuses. They are open from 10 am-4 pm Monday to Friday during term time, and 10 am-2 pm Monday to Friday outside of term time. You can also find more information on Target Connect.

Let’s be honest, your social life is a massive part of the university experience!

Some things I used to do as a student to keep safe were always staying with friends throughout the night, making sure I never walked home alone, and ensuring that none of my friends walked home on their own either. I would also never leave drinks unattended and never rely on anyone else to watch my drink. If you’re drinking alcohol, make sure to know your limits as well.

University life is all about new experiences, making friends, and creating memories. By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy everything Wrexham University has to offer while staying safe and looking out for each other.
