There is now a microwave in the Students' Union Bar, Lazy Lion for students to use.

My idea is simple and yet going to be alot more cost effective for students in the university.

Implementing a few microwaves in the canteen or other spots where the students are. Why? the average meal in the canteen can cost from £3 upwards once you include drinks. There are alot of mature students and also students living in accomodation locally, most of these students have it slightly tight on money, but at the same time are perfectly capable of making their own meals. What better way to encourage this than by allowing students to also reheat their own meals in the university? It would encourage them to cook more of their meals or to bring in their leftovers without having to go fully out of pocket to afford it!

I agree that in principle this is a good idea, especially noting the interest generated in the other recent idea about the price of food in the canteen. My concern is about the practicalities of this idea. Shared equipment when nobody has overall responsibility for it can very quickly become unhygienic. To proceed with the idea, it needs consideration about who will take responsibility for the cleaning of the microwaves and that will inevitably have associated costs; Who will do the cleaning? Who will set the fees? And if those who are using the facility self-fund it through fees, how will they be collected? It is my feeling that this is an idea that may be more achievable if further developed to consider these points.

Hello Wayne, apologies for such a long time to reply! I completely understand the points that you have raised. int he end it isn't something too easy to control etc. Some of the things that I could think of in regards to your points would be, if there were microwaves provided, what could there be to stop a small charge being made for the usage? i.e a small change spot for it, where a couple of pence allows it to run for a duration, this would still overall be a lot cheaper than canteen meals and depending on the fee placed on it, would be able to pay towards someone cleaning over the microwave every now and then? As far as my experience goes, it doesn't exactly take a lot of effort to clean up a microwave. Following on from your points, I wouldn't be able to say specifically who would do the cleaning. it would depend on where they are placed, for example if the Canteen isn't explicitly rented out to them, then perhaps the canteen staff could give the microwave a clean every now and then? the way the fee could be collected could be through the same sort of process as a vending machine, I'm sure I have seen something like it before. Ofcourse this would need to be further developed, which is why it is down as an idea for now for more support, and then if provided could be built into something hopefully manageable and more affordable for students.

This is a great idea!! Lots of large companies provide similar facilities for eating up baby food so it cant be too hard to implement. Also access to boiling water would be good for getting a cheeky pot noodle or cup a soup.
