Catch up!

It’s been a while! You guys deserve to know what we’ve been up to!

Before the Xmas break we had another Fairtrade Hamper to be won when students or staff purchased any Fairtrade item on campus to promote the availability of Fairtrade at university.

After the well needed break, our Vice President (Angus Hamil-Stewart) spoke during a lecture for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology about the Sustainability & Fairtrade Society, upcoming events and how students can get involved with Campus 2025! (Imagine a university that functioned using renewable energy?)

During Student Council a motion about removing plastic bags and plastic cups from SU which was successful approved! Our Vice President will now be writing up a Plastic Policy to limit the purchase and use of plastic across the Students’ Union.

Recent huge achievement happened!
Our Vice Chancellor, Professor Maria Hinfelaar (this lady means business) signed a Fossil Free Declaration highlighting the universities support to not invest in companies associated with fossil fuel!

Our President (Maryam Risalla), the Head of IT and Learning Resources (Rob Stockton) and Pip Francis (Assistant at Northop Campus) have been working to produce a Sustainable Print Policy for the university that will encourage staff and students to print less by thinking before printing and enforcing some changes such as less printers across campus, removing plastic binding and ensuring all work submissions are done electronically, monitoring staff printing usage and of course ensuring that the printed paper and recycled.

We had the great experience of inviting students from Ysgol I D Hooson to have a tour of the Techniquest Science Garden and take down some ideas such the plastic bottle greenhouse so that the students can do a report to their eco committee to improve their current school. Good luck guys!

We also have a new edition to our union which is Booky the Book share! Students and staff are able to pop into the SU lounge and take a book, give a book and share a book.

We had the Community Land Project come in and speak about projects based in Wrexham to benefit the local community. They discussed affordable self-build plots for sustainable homes/work environments and opportunities for learning and sharing skills such as food growing, health-self management, sustainable house building and woodwork.

Finally, to end the first month of 2018 we (Wrexham Glyndwr University/Union) recieved Fairtrade status! Great achievement, let's maintain it!

Things to look out for in next coming months: More veggie and vegan options and introducing a purchasable, reusable coffee cup, Go Green Week and Fairtrade Fortnight between 5th March – 16th March.

Don’t forget to check out the environmental calendar on our Facebook page for some exciting events!
