Extenuating Circumstances

Extenuating Circumstances

If you have or are experiencing unexpected events which have prevented you from submitting an assignment or attending an exam you should submit an extenuating circumstances claim. Unexpected events may include ill health (including mental health), pregnancy related illness, unexpected family commitments, change in personal circumstances such as divorce or severe accommodation issues and bereavement.

The University defines extenuating circumstances as:

‘…circumstances, normally exceptional and outside the control of the student, which have prevented them from performing in assessment at the level expected or required of them or from undertaking the assessment.’

The University Extenuating Circumstances procedure and guidance can be found here

When do I apply for extenuating circumstances?

You must submit your extenuating circumstances claim within 15 days (after) the assessment deadline.

How do I apply for extenuating circumstances?

Complete the online form which is available through MyUniPortal. Ensure that you provide a clear explanation of your circumstances and how this has affected your ability to engage with your studies and ability to submit for the required deadline.

Do I need to provide evidence of my extenuating circumstances?

Yes. You must provide independent, professional evidence to support your claim. Evidence must relate to the time of assessment.

What happens if my EC claim is accepted?

You will be given a further assessment opportunity as the same attempt. If you are submitting ECs for your first attempt at the assessment your next attempt will not be capped at 40% and you will not have to pay resit fees.

What happens if my EC claim is rejected?

You can submit an appeal against the EC panel decision to reject your claim but there are limited ground to do so.
