On a personal level, I must confess that prior to the Black Lives Matter movements in 2020, I had limited knowledge on Black History Month. However, since last year, I have taken time to learn and understand the contribution black people have made to the history and culture of the UK. As part of my learning, I came to the realisation that you don’t have to originate from black or minor ethnic origin to appreciate Black History Month. If you believe in fairness for opportunities and ending systemic racism, then you are celebrating this event in your own way.
When it comes to university life, we at Wrexham Glyndwr University are in a unique position. Having 6,000 students located in the UK and around the world, studying in a mixture of 100% online to on campus modules, this brings its own sets of opportunities to embrace this month. We all come from different backgrounds, upbringing and cultures, which makes appreciation of this event even more relevant. I encourage you all to speak openly with each other in person or virtually through Teams, on what this event means to you personally and in university life.
If you are up for sharing this with the wider audience, please send us your photographs and a brief paragraph, few lines would do absolutely fine, on what Black History Month means to you and what will you be doing differently this month. Looking forward to reading your responses!
