Extenuating circumstances are serious, short-term situations outside of your control that impact your ability to complete assessments on time or perform to the best of your ability. These might include:
The EC process allows you to request adjustments such as extensions or alternative assessment arrangements so that you are not unfairly disadvantaged by events that you couldn’t predict or prevent.
Submitting an EC form is a smart, responsible step when you find yourself in circumstances outside of your control. University is about more than assignments and grades; it’s about developing the skills to manage real-life challenges, and knowing when to ask for support is one of those skills.
You probably wouldn’t hesitate to tell a lecturer if your Wi-Fi went down during an online exam, so reporting more serious disruptions is necessary to enable you to achieve the best possible results academically.
The EC policy is there to protect your academic record and wellbeing and is a necessary safeguard as opposed to a loophole or excuse.
If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies or how to submit an EC request, get in touch!
Our friendly and supportive advisors are here to guide you through the process with understanding and confidentiality. They’ll help you complete the form, gather any supporting evidence, and make sure your case is submitted on time.
We’re not here to judge. We’re here to listen, support, and help make your student experience the best it can be.
1. Reach out to an advisor by emailing suadvice@wrexham.ac.uk or checking the guidance on the University’s website.
2. Complete the form explaining your circumstances and how they’ve affected your studies.
3. Attach evidence if necessary (e.g., a doctor’s note, letter from a counsellor, etc).
4. Submit before the deadline ideally before the assessment due date, or as soon as possible afterwards.
Even if you’re unsure your situation qualifies, it’s worth having a conversation to find the best way forwards for you.
If you’re struggling, it's worth knowing that many students have been in your shoes. Life doesn’t pause for assignments, and nobody expects you to power through at the expense of your health or wellbeing.
