As you may have seen in the news, Typeform, a piece of software that we use regularly in the Union, has recently had a data breach. Typeform reports that an external attacker managed to get unauthorized access to respondent data and downloaded it from a backup taken on 3rd May. Data inputted after 3rd May is not affected. The Students’ Union were made aware of this on Monday 2nd July. This issue impacts on Typeform users internationally and is not specific to the Students’ Union.

The good news is that Typeform responded immediately and fixed the source of the breach to prevent any further intrusion and have further tightened their security. Typeform is an industry leader which has been the unfortunate victim of hacking.

We use Typeform for things such as society affiliation requests, course rep feedback and for a brief period from September 2016 to February 2017, for some Advice Centre bookings. We have sought advice from the Information Commissioners Office on the issue who have confirmed that the potential data taken is low risk.

However, we do recommend that if you have used any of these forms on our website that you watch out for potential phishing scams, or spam emails and consider changing email passwords. We have never collected any payment information from you through these forms.

To be clear, this could only potentially affect you if you have requested a new society affiliation, left feedback for online Course Rep training, submitted an idea for a sustainability project or filled in an Advice Centre appointment form between September 2016 and February 2017.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.
