WGSU Well-Fed Visit!

Tuesday 20-06-2023 - 12:46

In February, I was invited to join our WGSU President on a Visit to Well-Fed Services in Shotton. They are a fresh food business, providing catering services to the community. Their aim is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to eat fresh, healthier food at mealtimes. Their Eat Well, Cook Easy range include ready meals and recipe packs you can prepare from scratch at home. All the recipes are tried and tested by the amazing chefs that work there and delivered throughout the community, including care homes, nurseries and schools.

It was obvious that this scheme was in high demand and Well-Fed wanted to reach as many people in the community as possible, this is when we were introduced to their new locker scheme. It is the first of it’s kind in Wales and Well-Fed wanted our students to benefit from their newest initiative.

The refrigerated locker would be installed on Campus where students or staff can get fresh healthy meals delivered directly to them via a brand new app. These meals can be paid for or students can be referred for free meals if they fall on hard times.

We all loved the idea, and felt it was a natural progression from our already popular campaign Help Yourshelf. Our president Lauren had some work ahead of her to secure funding for the locker installation and subsidised meals for students.

You can see all their great work and what they get up to on their website https://www.cancook.co.uk/

On our visit, we were lucky enough to meet the chefs and try their Lentil Curry and Rice, Paneer Kebabs and Chutney. The food was out of this world and definitely sealed the deal for us! We were also given a recipe card and ready measured herbs to try out their recipe at home.

I had the Creamy Mexican Fajita Mix recipe. The recipe card was easy to follow with a list of ingredients and equipment required.

My family enjoyed a lovely fresh meal, it wasn’t too spicy so it would be perfect for younger members of your family too!

Our president Lauren has worked tirelessly to get this new scheme off the ground for our students here at Wrexham and funding has been secured! So watch this space.. we have some exciting news coming soon!
