The National Student Survey (NSS), which is completed each year by final-year students across the UK, placed the Students’ Union and student voice in Wrexham as the highest ranking in Welsh universities with an overall satisfaction score of 81%.

Student officers and Students’ Union staff have delivered an experience for students that enhances their time at university through a combination of campaigns, events, advocating for the student voice and more.

Our online feedback platform, Unitu, has championed the success we’ve seen in student voice by offering students a simple and effective way of logging any feedback that is then picked up by a relevant member of Students’ Union or University staff.

Marc Caldecott, Head of Membership Services at Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union, said: “We’re delighted to be top in Wales for Student Voice and as a Students’ Union for representing the academic interests of students. We have worked hard to streamline the student voice system and make it more transparent.

“Over the last 18 months, we have introduced Unitu, the online student feedback platform, which has enabled us to respond to student feedback in real time and allowed us to close the feedback loop. Unitu, along with working in close partnership with the University and the hard work of staff has been key to this year’s result.”

The introduction of last year’s newest campaign, Help Yourshelf, continues to offer a cushion for students placed into hardship through the cost-of-living crisis. The campaign has received media attention and donations from the local area, including a donation from Wrexham’s MP, Sarah Atherton.

WGSU also continued its Period Dignity Campaign, which ensures that period products are available in all bathrooms across all of Wrexham University’s campuses to those who need to use them.

Alongside this, sustainability has been big on the Union’s agenda, with campaigns such as Cup Again and support for Against Breast Cancer’s Bra Bank scheme; not to mention running our first ever clothing exchange. Work like this wouldn’t be possible without working with our students, including our sustainability officer, and other key stakeholders both inside and outside of Wrexham University.

Wrexham University also scored highest in Wales in areas of course teaching and assessment and feedback, with several subject areas being ranked first in the UK on some survey aspects. These include:

  • Nursing
  • Creative Art and Design
  • Physiotherapy
  • Forensic Science

Having already achieved an Excellent score in this year’s Green Impact Students’ Unions awards programme (GISU) it’s been a great year for both Wrexham Glyndwr Students’ Union and Wrexham University alike.
