I went to see the Final Year Degree show @ WGU...

...and YOU should too!

It has been a challenging time and with restrictions in place across the country, it has been difficult for public events like this to happen in the past two years. Galleries, museums and theatres had been closed for the foreseeable. As a graduate with a Master's degree in Art Practice at Glyndwr, I was starting to feel uninspired. After all, how cultured could one possibly be sitting at home in isolation?!

So it’s fair to say I had been particularly excited to revisit the beautiful Grade 2 listed building that I spent so much time in as a student. More than that though, I just really wanted to experience an exhibition for what feels like the first time in ages!

By the way… if you’ve never been to Regent St. School of Creative Arts before, you’re in for a treat. You can read my article from 2019 on the topic here: https://www.wrexhamglyndwrsu.org.uk/articles/why-you-should-go-see-the-art-design-final-year-degree-show-wgu

So here we are.

I won’t spoil anything for you in case you decide to visit yourself, but there is a diverse collection of work on display. From glasswork, ceramics and print, to paintings, 3D and lens-based work… it’s pretty impressive. While admiring the work of these final year art and design students, I was transported back to the time where I was working in the studios myself, scrubbing walls down with my peers in anticipation of the degree show that was about to come.

Ahh… those were the days.

Just as I was making my exit from the glorious building, I bumped into Hannah Stickland, a BA(hons) Applied Arts student. I had the pleasure of speaking to Hannah about her experience at university and the creative thinking process behind her work. Assembled out of handcrafted resin and print work, Hannah depicted an emotive scene of a young girl playing on a swing. Upon closer observation, this miniature artwork could function as an aesthetically pleasing piece of home decor, but could equally stand as a conceptual piece in its own right.

Sadly my journey ended there, but there is still time to go and see the art and design exhibition for yourselves. ‘Unjammed’ - Wrexham Glyndwr University School of Creative Arts Final Degree Show is open to the public until 1st June, 2022.
