President Post: What I've been up to!

Friday 04-09-2020 - 11:43

Hi everyone, I’m Ebony, your previous Vice-President and now your Students' Union President. It’s been an incredibly busy couple of months since starting in my new role, so I wanted to take some time to let you all know what I’ve been up to over July and August.

At the beginning of July, we welcomed Chloe Williams, our new Vice-President, into the Students' Union family and since then all the staff have been working hard to make sure she’s settling into her new role. This has obviously been very different to how we normally would have undertaken our inductions as we’re all still working from our spare bedrooms.

Over the last two months, I have attended over 117 meetings including those with the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees and Academic and Operational Continuity just to name a few. We’ve also held three Student Advisory Group meetings (SAG) this month, taking our total to eight meetings in which students have had the opportunity to feed back on decisions being made by the institution about our new Covid reality.

In July I attended the ‘Lead and Change’ NUS conference which this year was all held online. Here we got the opportunity to explore various challenging subjects, take part in active learning sets, and network with other sabbatical officers from all around the UK. This was a fantastic opportunity for us to see what other students’ unions have been up to and to share our thoughts and ideas on the year ahead. We also attended a similar NUS called y Talwrn which is just for the sabbatical officers at Welsh institutions.

Since the end of July I also had my first visit to campus since March. I was there to film a video which shows all of our new and returning students the new safety measures that have been put in place to keep the campus COVID secure, including everything from floor stickers to hand sanitisers.

If you want to watch that video you can check it out here.

My main priority at the moment has been working on the welcome week plans for the start of the new academic year in September. Myself and other members of the SU have been working hard to ensure you will have an engaging and safe student experience. We have liaised with the SAG throughout this process and will continue to do so, as student input is especially important. You can keep up-to-date with all the latest freshers' info on our Facebook page or our dedicated webpage here.
