Race Equality at Wrexham University
Did you know that Wrexham University is working towards the Race Equality Charter accredited by Advance HE?
Wrexham University is currently undertaking a review and evaluation process to identify areas that might contribute to barriers for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Staff and Students to prevent them from achieving their potential; improve the sense of belonging and support students to succeed in their Higher Educational goals and ambitions. We are reviewing data and policy for curriculum, learning and teaching; student progression and awarding; and recruitment processes, to understand what we are doing well and what we might improve. We are hoping to achieve this by developing a Race Equality Action plan and submitting this as part of the Race Equality Charter mark.
What is the Race Equality Charter?
Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter helps institutions to identify and address the barriers facing Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students, while also providing a framework for action and improvement. Institutions can apply for a bronze or silver award, depending on their progress
Why are we working towards achieving a charter mark?
We are working towards achieving the Race Equality Charter Mark for a number of reasons:
1. To enable us to identify and address barriers faced by Black, Asian, and minority ethnic staff and students in addition to improving the experience for our staff and students
2. In order to demonstrate our commitment to action and improvement in relation to race equality in all aspects of our work, as educators, employers and community members
3. In support and alignment of Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan (2022), that stipulates all HEIs in Wales are required to apply for a Race Equality Charter mark by 2025
What does that mean for me?
This means that the University will be supporting and encouraging you to engage in opportunities to learn more about the diverse cultures and lived experiences of staff and students that study and work at our University. You will be asked to have your say through the annual Race Equality Survey, asked to attend information events and sessions via the SU and University, and feedback on changes that are implemented during your studies. You will be encouraged to contribute towards our inclusive student culture at the Wrexham University.
