The Speech and Language Therapy Society (SALT Soc) is a brand new society to Wrexham University, following the new course starting in 2022.

 

The aim of our society is to raise awareness of what a speech and language therapist does in a fun and inclusive way. We want to build a community within the unviersity of not just SLTs but also of all allied health professionals, as working together is such an important aspect of our future roles.

 

We are aiming to choose a new charity to support each semester through various social events. We also want to help support SLT students to strengthen their academic experience through inviting guest speakers and other acadmic support.

Upcoming Events

Our first ever event will be a social lunch for our first and second year SLT students to get to know each other. This will be held on the 28th November in Levant Restaurant, Wrexham.

 

On December 15th, we have an event being held at Glyn’s bar in the university. This will be a mocktail night available to all (lecturers, all students and plus ones). However these won’t be any ordinary mocktails – there will be the option to thicken these mocktails in accordance with IDDSI levels so you can experience what it’s like to drink thickened fluids which is the reality for some patients seen by SLT. If you don’t know what IDDSI means yet, then this will be a great chance to learn all about swallowing and speech therapy in a fun way! There will also be a bake sale for Niall Harbison charity in memory of one of our cohort's sister, as well as a quiz, bingo and other games. Dress code is casual with optional Christmas jumpers if you are feeling in a festive mood. We ask everyone to purchase a ticket beforehand – these will be £5 each which will go towards supporting the society and future events. Plan for the Year

• Hold a Makaton session for members to become certified in Level 1 Makaton.
• Charity event for our Semester 2 chosen charity.
• Book sale for first year SLT students to buy books from second years.
• Raise awareness of various projects and “days” that the RCSLT support through social media posts and other activities e.g. wearing purple for DLD day.
• Possible Welsh in the workplace session.

We will post regular events updates and will be raising awareness of various RCSLT days through our social media so please give us a follow!
