Hey!

My name is Amy Rowley and I have recently been recruited as your Student Council Chair. What is Student Council I hear you ask? Well let me tell you….

Student Council is one of the most senior committees within the Students’ Union (SU) and led totally by students. Its role is to create policy for the SU and hold your elected representatives to account whilst also steering the work of the organisation. Students are encouraged to attend and take part in debate but will not be able to vote. However, if you would like something to be discussed at council meetings, here is how you can do it:

  1. Go to https://www.wrexhamglyndwrsu.org.uk/thestudentvoice and submit your idea/concern/praise or other. I will then review the submission and take this forward to Student Council if appropriate.
  2. You can also contact a council representative here: https://www.wrexhamglyndwrsu.org.uk/main-menu/student-voice/student-council/meet-your-representatives and give your opinion and ask them to vote in the way you favour.
  3. Why not become a full-time paid or part-time voluntary council member yourself? More information can be found here: https://www.wrexhamglyndwrsu.org.uk/elections

Student Council meetings take place at the end of each month on a Wednesday afternoon. If you want to get involved and attend a Student Council meeting via Teams, you can do so by emailing Marc.Caldecott@Glyndwr.ac.uk

My role on Student Council is to ensure that the meetings are run smoothly, that everyone has a chance to use their voice and to ensure deadlines are met in terms of the administration of the meetings. I also decide whether motions are suitable enough to go to council and I ensure that council members are delivering on their manifestos and actions from Student Council meetings.

The first Student Council meeting of the academic year took place on 12th December and we invited the University’s Inclusion Manager Sally Lambah to explain the University’s Prevent Agenda.

Six motions where submitted to council and six were approved.  This means that the 6 motions will now be turned into SU policy and you can see a list of the SU current policy here: https://www.wrexhamglyndwrsu.org.uk/main-menu/student-voice/union-policy

These motions included increasing council meetings, adding council positions so that Student Council becomes more representatives and to add an award for the Postgraduate team at the SU Awards.

Why not come along to the next meeting on the 9th December 2020 at 2pm via Teams, and meet your representatives. The next one will see the Vice Chancellor, Maria Hinfelaar attend as an observer.

Feel free to email me with anything! I am here to represent you!

Take care!

Amy Rowley – Student Council Chair.
