What is the role?
Student Council officers are elected by the student body to represent a demographic of students. This will include gathering feedback from the demographic of students and feeding into Student Council which is one of the most senior committees within the Students’ Union. Being a Student Council officer means you will run campaigns and events and lobby the University through various committees on issues that affect students.
You will also have the opportunity to hold the full-time officers (Vice President and President) to account, ensuring that they are taking your concerns to the University and working on the commitments that they pledged in their manifestos when elected. You can also put motions forward and create policy within the SU that will benefit students. These part-time Council roles are voluntary, and you would need to put yourself forwards in the SU Elections and ask students to vote for you in order to be elected.
What is expected within the role? (e.g. how many meetings a year? Open days etc)
You will be expected to attend Student Council meetings (minimum 4 meetings a year). You will also be expected to uphold your pledges that you made when you run in the SU Elections and gather feedback from the demographic of students that you represent, e.g. if you are the Postgraduate Officer, this will mean gathering feedback from other postgraduate students.
What are the benefits? (i.e. paid/voluntary, CV opportunities)
As a student council officer, you will be creating real change to the student experience and will gain valuable skills that will equip you for the workplace after graduating. If you are thinking of running for a full-time officer position in your final year, becoming a part-time Council officer will give you knowledge and understanding on how the Students’ Union operates and the issues facing the student body when you are campaigning. There is also an opportunity to enrol onto a free extra 20-credit module in Advocacy which will support you in the role of being an officer and an extra credit bearing module to add to your CV.
What training will be provided within this role?
Full training and ongoing support will be provided by the SU if you are successfully elected.
